Strengths

1.      The department consistently achieves excellent undergraduate results at Bankura University, with several students securing top ranks each year. The demand ratio for admission to the UG courses is very high.

2.      Numerous alumni have cleared national-level exams such as NET and SET, many with JRF, and are currently pursuing PhDs in prestigious institutions both in India and abroad.

3.      A significant number of final-year students qualify in competitive exams like JAM (Biotechnology and Life Sciences) and GATE.

4.      Regular activities include student seminars, mentor-mentee sessions, and remedial classes to support learning.

5.      Career guidance is frequently offered through interactions with alumni, along with hosting national seminars.

6.      The department maintains a vibrant Alumni Association, organizing reunions every five years.

7.      Teaching is enhanced through innovative methods such as PowerPoint presentations, educational field visits, and excursions to create an engaging learning experience.

8.      The department has a well-maintained and accessible library for students.

9.      Graduates are placed in schools, colleges, and administrative services. Many alumni are now faculty members in various government and aided colleges and universities.

10.    Faculty members contribute actively to research, with publications in reputable journals and books and presentation of papers in National, International conferences. One faculty member holds a patent. The faculty members also participate in administrative works of the college.

11.    The department conducts practical classes and serves as an examination center for Netaji Subhas Open University.

12.     A career-focused Certificate Course in Aquarium Management has been introduced.

Weaknesses

1.      A significant dropout rate is observed in the first and second semesters, as many students opt for professional courses like MBBS and Nursing.

2.      Students from Bengali-medium backgrounds often face challenges due to language barriers, which hinders deep subject comprehension.

3.      The department lacks adequate infrastructure, including classroom space and necessary equipment, especially for implementing the New Education Policy (NEP) effectively.

4.      To fill up the vacant post in the subject to minimize students: faculty ratio.

Opportunities

  1. Scope to launch a Postgraduate program in the subject.
  2. Good opportunities for zoology students of placement in lectureship, research, forest department, competitive exams, animal care taker branch, Forensic Medicine, Pest control, animal suppliers etc.
  3. They can start small scale industries such as aquarium fishery, Poultry, Sericulture, Pisciculture etc.
  4. Alumni can contribute through financial aid, scholarships, and endowments to support students, especially those with financial constraints or strong academic potential.

Challenges

  1. Reducing the dropout rate among early-semester students.
  2. Encouraging students to read academic books and journals despite the distraction of social media.
  3. Inspiring students to pursue academic careers in an era marked by limited job opportunities.
  4. Keeping students updated with global academic developments and trends.
  5. Introduction of coaching in JAM, GATE etc.

Future Plan of the Department

Expansion of infrastructure and acquisition of modern equipment.

&
