The
Central Library of the college was in place since its very foundation
with two library- staff members, Nihar Ray Chaudhury being the first
Librarian. Subsequently its collection has been enriched and enlarged
considerably; its service has been extended to encompass a much wider
range.
Presently, the library is housed in a separate two-storied building of
which the first floor was inaugurated by the Honorable then Bishop of
Kolkata and Moderator’s Episcopal Commissary of Durgapur Diocese, Rt.
Rev. P.S.P. Raju on 04.12. 2002. prior to the centenary celebration of
the college. Now it has a collection of 50,000 (aprox.) books, a few
manuscripts, and is subscribing to a good number of journals and
periodicals. English and Sanskrit are the oldest departments of the
college and the library’s collection in these subjects is substantial.
The library has also been trying to build a collection of non-book
materials, like floppies, CDs, etc, to meet the present-day needs.
Besides, most of the science departments have their own departmental
libraries. Departmental seminars and discussions are arranged in the
Reading Rooms of the library. Very recently, attempts have been made
to computerize the library to provide better service to the students
and teachers.
The
old Career Advisory Unit of the college has been revived and renamed
as the Career Guidance Cell and is functioning from the library. Here
the teachers provide career counseling to the students, making them
aware of their future prospects in various spheres of activity.
